The Fresno Production Studio Project

The Fresno Filmmakers Forum in Fresno, CA (Fresno is cooler than you’d think!) is forming a non-profit organization that will, among other things, build a much-needed production facility in Fresno.

The goals for The Fresno Production Studio Project are to provide competitive and comprehensive facilities to strengthen the production industry in Fresno by expanding local filmmaking opportunities as well as attracting opportunities from elsewhere. The facility will be flexible enough to be valuable for motion picture, television, and online productions, stadium concert tour rehearsals, photography, and other functions requiring large state-of-the-art studio space.

Fresno is mid-way between Los Angeles and San Francisco. It is approximately a 3 1/2 hour drive from either city center. In a few years, once the bullet train is operating, Fresno will be approximately 1 1/2 hours from the cities.

The City of Fresno is extremely film-friendly, not charging for film permits or use of City property (see http://www.fresnofilm.com/) .

The developing plans of The Fresno Production Studio Project are for a large facility on approximately 4 acres to include a 12,000 sq ft (120’ x 100’ x 30’) stage with an in-floor water tank; a 6,400 sq ft (80’ x 80’ x 25’) audience-rated stage with a hard cyc; production office space; catering and food services; a screening room/stage play theater; and subsidized retail office space for support services such as grip, expendables, post-production, local production companies, audio services, and casting.

Further, the non-profit organization created from Fresno Filmmakers Forum will be committed to the community and the planet.

As such, The Fresno Production Studio Project expects to be an economic-development endeavor to support an economically-depressed region in Southwest Fresno by creating sustainable job opportunities and formal training opportunities within the Fresno Production Studio.

The Fresno Production Studio will also employ cutting-edge applications of environmentally-friendly processes in construction, operation, and maintenance. These will include the best thinking for HVAC, lighting, water, greenery, and other resource usages.

The Fresno Production Studio Project is in development and welcomes comments, suggestions, and expressions of interest.

Hello,
My name is Gabriela Henriques and I am a first year communications student at UCLA. My family and I moved to Fresno from Austin, Texas in the summer of 2008. During my senior year of high school, I produced and distributed a compilation CD of high school rock bands. This project benefited the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM), a non-profit organization that provides primary health care for Austin’s low-income
musicians.
Living in Austin, Texas, the Live Music Capital of the World, I became aware of indie film particularly during the South by Southwest Film Festival. My future goal is to work in the media entertainment industry. I would particularly be interested in working with the Fresno Film Production Studio project. I am wondering about the possibility of a non-paying summer internship opportunity in which I can learn about the film industry and the marketing/advertising that is involved in making something like the Fresno Production Studio Project be put into motion.
Thanks,
Gabriela Henriques

I would like to be part of this phenomenal group and unfortunately because of my work schedule I cannot attend the meetings, but by some good fortune, I can actually attend the February 16 meeting, if held that day, since I am off on that day. Otherwise, I will keep abreast through the postings.
